SACRAMENTO – Today, the California Faculty Association (CFA) – representing over 23,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches who teach within the 23 California State University campuses – honored Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) with their
2011 Legislator of the Year award.

CFA statement on passage of state budget on June 28

On Tuesday, the California State Legislature approved a state budget that contained at least $150 million in funding cuts to the California State University. The budget also allowed for additional triggered cuts if revenue to the state falls below projections. These budget reductions come on top of $500 million in cuts enacted in March.

State College and university faculty and staff in California and across the nation, are taking Action in April to defend public higher education in the face of sweeping funding cuts and attacks on the rights of employees and students.

The cuts mean tens of thousands of students will be turned away from public colleges and universities while students who do attend will accumulate more debt, face much larger class sizes, and receive pared down course offerings, among other losses to the quality of education.

Plans for rallies and marches to protest the deep cuts to public education have expanded from California to the rest of the world – and social media is playing a major role.

On February 26, the California Faculty Association launched a Facebook fan page and by this morning, just five days later, more than 900 people had joined the page.
