Bargaining update: three-day session fails to yield settlement

Three days of bargaining ended Saturday without an agreement.

Initially bargaining appeared headed in a fruitful direction, but the process broke down when the Chancellor’s representatives began flip-flopping and setting moving targets in the discussion of faculty issues.

Andy Merrifield, Chair of the CFA Bargaining Team, said, “The Chancellor simply must understand that it is not only HIS issues that are key to reaching a settlement. We recognize a fair contract is balanced in which the needs of the faculty are just as important as the needs of management.

The CSU Trustees were meeting inside today, first in closed session to discuss “executive personnel matters” and collective bargaining. Then they met in committee on yet another new policy to give more raises to campus presidents, now from university auxiliaries.

The strike vote continues — CSU executives need to bring a new attitude to bargaining

The strike vote is proceeding apace with campuses reporting strong turnout both online and at in-person voting last week.

As reported elsewhere, after the first day of voting the Chancellor’s Office asked to meet again about the outstanding issues left in bargaining. Yet another effort will be made on May 3-4 to see if progress can be made at the table before moving to the final statutory step called fact-finding.

The following statement was issued by the CFA Bargaining Team yesterday:

Bargaining teams from CFA and CSU management will continue the process of mediation Friday in an effort to agree on the faculty’s next contract.

This week’s session with neutral mediator Tony Butka is the last scheduled mediation date. However, more dates could be scheduled if it is mutually agreed upon by the parties.

Third mediation session held in contract talks

A third mediation session between CFA and CSU management was held last week over the ongoing contract dispute.
